Can IPL undo Arizona sun damage — and how long does it last?

Why pigment work in this climate is maintenance rather than a one-time fix.

Short answer. IPL can clear much of the brown pigment and diffuse redness from sun exposure in three to five sessions spaced about four weeks apart. It does not stop new damage, so most clients repeat a session or two each year.

Living here leaves a record on the face, chest and hands. IPL is the tool that edits that record — but understanding what it does and does not do will save you disappointment.

What does IPL actually treat?

Broad-spectrum light is filtered so it is absorbed preferentially by brown pigment and by the haemoglobin in small vessels. Pigment darkens, rises and flakes away over five to seven days; fine vessels are reduced. Freckling, sun spots, uneven tone and diffuse redness all respond.

It does not resurface texture. Fine lines, scarring and enlarged-looking pores are a microneedling or peel conversation instead.

How many sessions, and how far apart?

Typical series3–5 sessions
SpacingAbout 4 weeks
First visible change2 weeks
Maintenance1–2 sessions a year
In this climate the goal is to clear what is there, then stay ahead of it. Anyone promising permanence has not accounted for the sun outside.

When is the right time of year?

Autumn through spring is the easier window, because treated skin needs to stay out of direct sun and tanned skin narrows the settings that can be used safely. Summer treatment is possible if the area is genuinely covered and you are consistent with SPF.

What you do at home decides how long it holds

—Daily SPF 30 or higher, reapplied — this is the whole game.
—A vitamin C or pigment-focused serum supports the result between sessions.
—Retinoids paused for five days before and three days after each session.
—Hats and shade for the first two weeks after each session.

Common questions

Asked in the room, answered here

Does IPL hurt?

Most clients describe brief warmth with a snap. There is no numbing needed for most areas.

Can I wear makeup after?

Yes, once any warmth settles — usually the next morning. Skip actives for three days.

Will the spots come back?

The ones treated do not return, but new pigment forms with new exposure. That is why maintenance exists.

Is IPL safe on darker skin tones?

It requires careful assessment. For some skin types Marina will recommend a different route rather than treat.
